Fashion crosses many boundaries and costumes have often been considered
works of art. The Perestroika era saw a return to the historical avant-garde
bringing many types of artistic genre together and often blurring the divisions
between art and life. Art was a show, and life was art. Alternative fashion
shows and performances merged, turning catwalks into performance pieces, as is
typified by the work of Vivienne Westwood, the sots-art costumes of George
Ostretsov, the vintage shows of Garik Assa, the aesthetic and fanciful costumes
of Katya Filippova, and the work of Alexander Petlura will all be
discussed.
